| Common label industry terms that are good to know when shopping for off-the-shelf stock labels, laser labels, thermal labels and custom printed label supply solutions.
Adhesive: Substance applied to the back of a pressure-sensitive label for adhesion to surfaces.
Bleed: When the ink coverage of the label runs beyond the cut edge of a label.
Butt cut: The printed message of a label (either an image and/or wording)
Custom Labels: Custom printed labels created with custom message, design and or construction that is tailored to exact customer specifications.
Computer Labels: These labels can be printed on a computer pinfeed printer. Also known as computer pin feed labels.
Die cut: Refers to the cut that produces a label shape. In rectangles, it distinguishes rounded corners from the square corners common to butt cut labels and is a requirement for automatically applied labels.
Fanfold: Finishing labels with a perforation and zigzag fold so that it can be imprinted or used as continuous.
Label length: The label's dimension from one side to the other in the direction of the pull of the roll.
Label width: The label's dimension from one side to the other in the direction from one edge of the roll to the other.
Laser stock: Special printing stock, often paper, designed for use with laser printers. Also known as laser labels.
Perforation: A series alternating cut and uncut areas used to aid in tearing or folding
Permanent: Common term for pressure sensitive adhesives designed to give a permanent or lasting bond.
Pin feed: Relates to the tractor-feed holes in specialised label stock, utilized by certain impact imprint systems for moving continuous paper forms. Also known as computer pinfeed labels.
